How to Rig Squid and Cuttlefish heads on Circle Hooks

After our success at Shark Bay with rigging Whiting heads, and subsequently other fish heads on circles for Snapper, I tried a similar technique for Snapper at Point Lowly on Spencer Gulf in using the heads of Cuttlefish.
Using 60 lb nylon monofilament traces because of the heavy bottom and wire-weed, the circle hooks were attached as first described, at an angle to the trace which improves the efficacy of the rig when using heavy monofilament traces. I have exaggerated the thickness of the trace in the illustrations but you would have guessed that.

1. After attaching the hook to the trace and adding the rubber as previously described, thread a large bodkin or bag sewing needle with both legs and punch right through the head of the cuttlefish or squid from top to bottom.

2. Pull both legs through the squid or cuttlefish head.

3. Wrap both legs over the top of the squid or cuttlefish heads and tie a simple overhand knot behind the hook.

4. Tie another overhand knot of top of the first so that a Granny Knot is formed.

5. Close the knot and trim the tags.

6. You can easily see from this diagram how effectively the rig works when tension comes on the line.
